A Ghostly Shadow

Description

I lived in a nearby village all my life, but have never been to see this amazing church. I've seen the top of it while passing by in the distance. When I entered the car park I realized just how huge and imposing this church is! It was raining a heavy drizzle when I arrived, and as a gazed up into the heavens I noticed the striking ghostly shadow of the church itself on the skies above. The powerful lights on the ground cast this shadow on the clouds of rain. This was amazing. I had to capture this moment! But there was one problem I hadn't brought my camera with me! So I rushed back home to collect it, hoping the rain would not stop before I returned. Twenty minutes later, I was back and luckily the rain still lashed down. With my camera rain cover tightly attached, I captured this wonderful moment.

All Saints' Church, Brixworth, in Northamptonshire, is an outstanding example of early Anglo-Saxon architecture located in central England, and has been called "perhaps the most imposing architectural memorial of the 7th century yet surviving north of the Alps". It is the largest English church which remains substantially as it was in the Anglo-Saxon period.

Brixworth is mentioned in the Peterborough Chronicle as being a monastery founded when Sexwulf became bishop of Mercia, before the death of King Wulfhere in 675AD. Many elements from the original building remain visible, although there are later additions, notably the tower, from further periods of building in the 10th, 13th and 19th centuries. The older building contains features typically found in architecture of a later period, for example an ambulatory.
